A fresh face for the European Film Market in Berlin

A fresh face for the European Film Market in Berlin

- With the appointment of Matthijs Wouter Knol, who has been part of the Berlinale ensemble as programme manager of Berlinale Talents since 2008, the European Film Market (EFM) will be freshened up somewhat. “Matthijs Wouter Knol will inspire new areas of business and the development of the European Film Market,” stated Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick. “With Knol, a professional is joining us who knows the festival well. He will strategically strengthen the synergies that have developed between the festival and the EFM.”

The former Dutch producer and industry expert will take over his new position as head of the Berlinale’s EFM on 1 June, whilst long-standing EFM boss Beki Probst is to become president of the EFM. In this new function, she will support Knol with her extensive experience, and will be able to advise and provide an input with her international network.

Due to his ambitious management of the former Berlinale Talent Campus, Matthijs Wouter Knol is already well acquainted with the festival and the EFM. After studying contemporary history and working as a freelance journalist, he started a career as a producer and focused on developing, financing and internationally co-producing documentary film projects. In 2007, Knol started to work for the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), where he divided his activities between the co-production and sales markets, as well as the IDFAcademy training programme, until he became head of Berlinale Talents.
