A spectacular increase in production during the first half of the year

- Following the slowdown in volume and a clear fall in investment in 2014 (read the news), French film production seems to have started moving forward again, judging from the assessment of the first half of 2015 published by Ficam (the Federation of the Film, Audiovisual and Multimedia Industries). Between the start of January and the end of June, the production of fiction feature films of French initiative reached a record level of 92 projects that had commenced production, which represents a rise of 60% compared to the same period in 2014 (57 features) and is also markedly higher than in 2013 (72 features).

This return to form is all the more spectacular when we examine investments, which recorded an increase of 90% compared to the first half of 2014, with the average budget jumping from €5 million to €6 million, thanks in particular to two films with budgets in excess of €20 million, and 29 between €4 million and €10 million.

On the other hand, Ficam regretfully notes an increase in the rate of film-shoot relocations: 37% in total during the first half of 2015 (or 17 percentage points more than in 2014), 46% for films with a budget ranging from €7 million to €10 million, and almost 70% for visual effects. This is a worrying trend for France’s technical industries, which will nevertheless benefit from an improvement in national and international tax credits from 1 January 2016 (read the news).
