Country Focus: Malta

Malta a haven for new films

Malta a haven for new films

- Malta’s landscapes and valuable infrastructure are gaining ground as stand-in locations for major film and TV productions from around the world, reports the Malta Film Commission (MFC).

According to Film Commissioner Luisa Bonello, the country will be at the epicenter of an unprecedented number of international film and TV productions, as a result of the MFC’s laborious efforts to attract interest from foreign production houses.

“2010 looks set to continue this positive trend with at least another 14 productions expected to have filmed here by the end of the year, and set to contribute millions of Euros directly into Malta’s economy” said Ms Bonello, and went on to add that “the efficacy and practicality of Malta’s film incentives scheme continues to be crucial to most decisions to film on the island”.

Omnipresent support from both the government and local entrepreneurs has contributed to Malta’s growing wealth of technical services readily available to parties looking to pick the country as a location.

“This steady influx of productions will contribute considerable added value to the economy,” stated the country’s Minister of Economy, Finance and Investments, Tonio Fenech, adding that this rise in interest “will consolidate [Malta’s] reputation as a viable, efficient destination in the face of stiff competition from other countries”.

In recent years, Malta has doubled as Roman Egypt in Alejandro Amenabar’s Agora [+see also:

, ancient Troy in Wolfgang Petersen's US/Malta/UK co-produced Troy, and modern-day Iraq in Lee Tamahori’s Belgium/Netherlands co-production of The Devil’s Double which recently finished filming. This year, the country is to welcome yet another major production, with HBO’s new medieval fantasy TV series Game of Thrones choosing Malta as its second production location.
