Screen-based media the big earner for Denmark’s Egmont

- Last year, Danish media corporation Egmont – the owner of Nordisk Film and Norway’s TV2 – generated a record €1.6 billion revenue. When this is broken down, screen-based media for the first time accounted for more than 50% of the earnings. Operating profit was €191 million, up 2.9% on 2012.

“A strategic milestone,” said Egmont president and CEO Steffen Kragh, who attributed the result “of the banner year” to strong TV viewing figures, box-office film successes, strong magazine and book performances, and high digital income.

“Unique content and unique moments are central to Egmont’s strategy, as is our ability to provide content to consumers on their mobile screens. Creativity and technology will be the core drivers of our transformation towards even more moving pictures and screen-based media,” he added.

Producing films in all Scandinavian countries and operating cinemas in Denmark and Norway, Nordisk Film posted a €339 million revenue for a €30 million profit, up 70%. In April 2013, Nordisk acquired Norway’s largest cinema chain, Oslo Kino; during the year, Nordisk theatres sold 5.8 million tickets in Denmark and 3.2 million in Norway.

Also representing Sony’s PlayStation activities in the Nordic Baltic regions, Nordisk launched the PlayStation 4 in November, selling 55,000 game consoles in the Nordic countries. The TV2 Group, Norway’s largest commercial media house, recorded a €446 million turnover for a €33 million profit. In 2013, Egmont increased its donations to charitable activities to €10 million.
