Danish 57.4% market share in theatres for October

- In October, American blockbusters couldn’t find their way into the upper echelons of Denmark’s cinema statistics, while Danish directors Mikkel Nørgaard’s Department Q thriller, The Absent One [+see also:
film profile], and Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg’s children’s film, Crumbs – All at Stake, contributed to giving a 57.4% local market share.
“Local films are in relatively good shape,” concluded Kim Pedersen, head of the Danish Cinemas trade association. “Five Danish titles are in the Top Ten for 2014, with two local productions in the lead – till now, Danish movies have controlled 27.7% of the market, so we can expect a 25% result by the end of the year.”
The second instalment in the Jussi Adler-Olsen franchise, from Zentropa Entertainments, The Absent One has reached 670,607 admissions over five weeks, while Crumbs – All at Stake (number six in Danish producer Regner Grasten’s kids’ franchise) has recorded a 205,557-strong attendance.
It is interesting to compare these figures to those of the best-performing US releases: David Fincher’s Gone Girl (90,512), Luke Greenfield’s Let’s Be Cops (80,000), Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys (67,331) and Wes Ball’s The Maze Runner (65,545). Still, it should be noted that Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar [+see also:
film profile] and Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 are both coming up.
The performances of Nikolaj Lie Kaas as detective superintendent Carl Mørck and Fares Fares as his sidekick, Assad, of Copenhagen Police’s unit for “cases of special focus”, have earned the film the number-one spot in the 2014 Top Ten charts, followed by Mikkel Serup’s comedy The Reunion 2 – The Funeral [+see also:
