With no real 2013 blockbuster, Norwegian cinemas increase admissions by 2%

- Norwegian cinemas, which last year reached 12.1 million admissions – up 4% on 2011 – continue to attract audiences: during the first six months of 2012, their attendance rose by 2%, to almost 5 million, including a domestic market share of 11.8% - in spite of competition from TV networks and a strong decline in DVD sales, and the lack of a real local or international blockbuster.

“Legal consumption of films has never been bigger. Although they have been become more available on VOD and on digital channels, the theatres seem to maintain their position. The audiences are apparently still looking for the social dimension of watching movies with others at a cinema,” said director of communications Birgitte Langballe (photo), of Norwegian cinema association, Film & Kino.

The summer season has also started successfully in Norway, with admissions 8.2% up on last year. Langballe expected the trend to continue, with such upcoming releases as US directors Marc Foster’s World War Z [+see also:

, Gore Verbinsky’s The Lone Ranger and Norwegian director Johan KaosCrack, Back & Sack, and numerous local pictures waiting in the wings.
