Europe’s biggest prize

- San Sebastian offers young filmmakers chance to win a record Euros150,000

The global film industry is full to brimming with festivals of various kinds and so the organisers of the 50th international festival of San Sebastian in Spain (19-28 September) put their heads together and came up with an ingenious way of attracting filmmakers and media attention: a cash prize of Euros150,000 for the best first or second film. Fifteen of those competing are European productions:

- Hafid (Il Mare) by Baltasar Kormákur (Iceland)
- Whale Rider by Niki Caro (NZ-Germany),
- Baby by Philip Stolz (Germany),
- Grosse Madchen Weinen Nicht by Maria Von Heland (Germany)
- Carlos Contra El Mundo by Chiqui Carabante (Spain)
- Como El Gato Y El Raton by Rodrigo Triana (Columbia-France)
- Dans Ma Peau by Marina de Van (France), - Les Diables by Christopher Ruggia (France)
- Hukkle by Palfi Gyorgy (Ungary)
- Mima Ja Morrison by Lenka Hellstedt (Finland)
- Scherbentanz by Chris Kraus (Germany)
- El Traje/i> by Alberto Rodriguez (Spain)
- Vivre Me Tue by Jean-Pierre Sinapi (France)
- Vylet by Alice Nellis (Czech Republic).
