Over 60% of Spaniards find domestic films “good or very good”

Apparently, when EGEDA (Audiovisual Producers’ Rights Management Body) commissioned Metroscopia to conduct an opinion poll to find out what Spaniards thought of their film industry, some were up in arms, fearing a torrent of criticism about the sector that is always the centre of public attention.

However, not only were the results not negative, they reveal that 61% of participants think that Spanish productions are “good or very good” – three times more than those who rate it as “poor or very poor”.

But it’s not all good news, as the report contains numerous criticisms. One of the most significant is that 80% believe that the Spanish film industry doesn’t take viewers’ tastes into account. This opinion is echoed by Daniel Écija (producer of Brain Drain [+see also:

and Chef’s Special), who recently commented that “cinema is behind the times”.

Borja Cobeaga, who next week releases his debut feature The Friend Zone, thinks the solution is to target “more demanding audiences, as well as those who only go to the cinema to enjoy themselves”.
