EuropaCinema returns to Viareggio in reduced version

The 26th edition of the EuropaCinema Festival of Viareggio – this year in a “limited edition” due to cuts in funding that left it with a little over one-fourth its budget of preivous years – will be held from September 21-24 and will be dedicated to the victims of the explosion at the city’s train station this summer.

Despite its name, the event will feature, for the first time, US films (including Quentin Tarantino’s German co-production Inglourious Basterds [+see also:

); as well as Marco Spagnoli’s documentary Hollywood sul Tevere; the directorial debut short of actor Adriano Giannini, Il Gioco; and the section Europa in Opera, of eight operas created by the Unitel of Munich.

There will also be two retrospectives, on Ingmar Bergman and Paolo Virzì, the latter who on the festival’s closing night will receive the Fellini 8 and ½ Prize along with actress Laura Morante.
