The jury of the 60th Berlinale has awarded the talent of Turkish director Semih Kaplanoğlu, who with Honey [+see also:

film profile] closes his autobiographical "Yusuf Trilogy", following Eggs and Milk. The honey attracted the Golden Bear also thanks to its big little lead, Bora Altas.

The film was produced by the director in co-production with Germany’s Johannes Rexin and Bettina Brokemper (Producer on the Move 2006) for Heimatfilm (see news from festival).

The Silver Bear - Grand Jury Prize went to Romanian filmmaker Florin Şerban for his dramatic If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle [+see also:

film profile], a hard, sparse Romanian/Swedish co-production. To write the script, the director spent two months in a youth detention centre (see news).

Much anticipated and well deserved was the Silver Bear for Best Director to Roman Polanski for his Hitchcockian thriller The Ghost Writer [+see also:

film profile] (see news). Polanski, who could not come participate in the awards ceremony for reasons by now known to all, sent an ironic message through one of his producers: "Even if I could come, I wouldn't. Because the last time I went to a festival to accept an award, I ended up in jail."
