First films honoured at Freiburg

Actress Hanna Schygulla, Fassbinder’s famous muse and jury president (see news) at the 24th Freiburg International Film Festival, presented the Regard d’Or Grand Prize to Georgian director George Ovashvili for The Other Bank. The film, which traces an absent father’s search in the ruins of war-torn Georgia, also won over viewers who gave it the Audience Award.

Brillante Mendoza’s Lola is the second major winner with two accolades – the Don Quixote Film Club Federation Award and the Ecumenical Jury Prize. It also received a Special Mention from the International Jury.

Mexican filmmaker Rigoberto Perezcano picked up the Special Jury Prize for Northless, while the Talent Tape Award went to Iranian director Nader T. Homayoun’s Tehran [+see also:

Except for Mendoza’s title, the three award-winning films are all debut features.

Once again this year, the Freiburg International Film Festival hosted almost 30,000 viewers.
