Plzeň Finále announces competition titles

Nine Czech features and co-productions are vying for the Golden Kingfisher at the 23rd Finale festival in Plzeň (April 18-24).

, from director Jan Hřebejk, an eminent scientist is revealed to have collaborated with the secret police. The film won the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the C.I.C.A.E. Award in the Berlinale Panorama selection earlier this year.

, from Slovak director Mira Fornayová, is a realist drama about two emigre sisters in Dublin and the dark secret they share.

Recipient of nine Czech Lions Awards (see news), Marek Najbrt's Protektor tells the story of a journalist who turns Nazi collaborator in an attempt to save his Jewish wife.

, directed by Radim Špaček, concerns a police investigator destroys all who get in his way of his misguided romantic obsession.

Jánošík: The True Story retells the popular legend of Juraj Jánošík, a historical bandit. Polish mother-daughter team Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik direct the co-production between Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Irena Pavlásková's film An Earthly Paradise for the Eyes portrays a woman attempting to find a father for her daughters during the political upheaval following the Prague Spring.

Men in Rut, from director Robert Sedláček, is a comedy about a remote village that secures its hopes for the future on hosting a national deer-calling competition.

, a young couple's attempt to save their romance goes badly wrong when an interloper joins them on their holiday.

Unknown Hour by Dan Svátek is based on the true story of a hospital worker turned serial killer.

A further 19 new features will screen out of competition at the annual showcase of Czech cinema, while 19 documentaries are contending for the Best Documentary Award.
