FESTIVALS Switzerland

Locarno unveils first line-up under new director Père

by

The programme of the 63rd Locarno International Film Festival (August 4-14) features a number of European titles. With a strong focus on auteur cinema, the line-up is also the first under the festival’s new director, Oliver Père, who left Cannes’ renowned Directors’ Fortnight to head the prestigious Swiss festival.

This year, the element most common throughout the various festival sections is the young age of the filmmakers, whether they are part of an already emerging generation of international cinema auteurs or are making their directorial débuts. Parallel to this “freshness”, Locarno is also featuring a retrospective on Berlin-born director Ernst Lubitsch.

Director Eric Khoo of Singapore heads the jury that will choose this year’s Golden Leopard winner.
