The Last Kiss in France
- Out today on 163 screens, expectations are high for Muccino's film despite a lukewarm reception by French critics
Renamed Juste un baiser, Gabriele Muccino’s film is released today onto 163 French screens by GBVI (Gaumont Buena Vista International). Unusually for an Italian film, the release was preceded by a very intense promotional campaign - something that has only happened for films by Nanni Moretti and Roberto Benigni.
The Last Kiss was seen by some 3 million Italian filmgoers and won 5 Davids in 2001 and its youthful cast, lead by Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Stefano Accorsi (winner of a Volpi Cup at this year’s Venice Film Festival for Michele Placido’s Un viaggio chiamato amore), have become stars.
That said, nobody really knows how French audiences will react to Juste un baiser. French critics were not enthusiastic:”Liberation” called it a “rose-water comedy shot as though it were an endless advert”, “Telerama” called it a “nice” film and “Le Monde” did not bother with a review.
