FUNDING Spain

Three Spanish projects get co-production funding from Ibermedia

by

Last week, the Ibermedia Programme announced the 81 film projects set to receive funding as part of the second funding call of 2011, in the areas of co-production (which, with 27 projects, represents the bulk of the funding), development, delivery, distribution and exhibition.

Of these 27 projects, three were presented by Spanish companies. The first of these, produced by Pedro Costa PC with two specialists in co-productions with Latin America, Tornasol Films and Castafiore Films, and Argentina’s Sono Film, is entitled >Atraco (“Robbery”). The film, directed by Eduard Cortés, will be a thriller with political overtones set in the 1950s between Spain and several countries in America.

Miel de Naranjas (“Orange Honey”), a co-production by Alta Producción (Enrique González Macho) with Portugal’s Fado Filmes, marks a return to directing for Imanol Uribe. Meanwhile, Galician company Continental Films (who set up the crowdsourcing platform Wecoop – see news) is producing Virginia Curiá’s animated film Witchcraft, with Brazil’s Otto Desenhos Animados.

Moreover, three projects, Venezuelan title La Distancia Más Larga (“The Longest Distance”), Portuguese film Gelo and Mexican movie Miradas Múltiples, will have backing from Spanish production companies (Castro Producciones, Potenza PC and Comunicación Fractal, respectively).

The aim of Ibermedia, which includes 18 countries, is to lay the foundations for a Latin American audiovisual space, fostering the co-production, distribution and exhibition of Spanish and Portuguese-language films for the big screen and television, and increasing the presence of Latin American audiovisual production on international markets. Financed by the member countries, it is suffering the consequences of the economic cuts (for example, the contribution from the ICAA has dropped from €400,000 in 2007 to €74,000 in 2011) and, from 2012, it will discontinue the exhibition and delivery funding lines, will reformulate the distribution line and will have only one funding call.
