(“The Pirogue”) is currently enjoying a promising buzz behind the scenes of the French industry. Shot between February 24 and April 14 in Dakar and Palmarin, the director’s third feature after Toubab Bi (1991) and TGV (1999) traces a true immigration odyssey.

The cast includes Souleymane Seye Ndiaye, Laïty Fall, Malamine Dramé "Yalenguen ", Balla Diarra, Salif "Jean Diallo ", Babacar Oualy and Mame Astou.

Scripted by Abasse Ndione, David Bouchet and Eric Névé, the film opens in a fishing village in the outer suburbs of Dakar. Many pirogues set off from there to reach the Spanish territory of the Canary Islands, after an often deadly crossing.

Baye Laye is captain of a fishing pirogue. He knows the sea. He doesn’t want to leave, but he has no choice. He has to take 30 men to Spain. These men don’t all understand each other. Some have never even seen the sea and nobody knows what awaits them…

Produced by Eric Névé for Les Chauves-Souris, La Pirogue was co-produced by Senegal’s Astou Films, Arte France Cinéma, Appaloosa Films, Royal Pony Film (Germany), LCS and Studio 37. The feature received an advance on receipts from the National Film and Moving Image Centre (CNC), was pre-bought by Canal+, Ciné+ and TV5 Monde, and is supported by the Sofica Banque Postale Images 4.

The theatrical distribution, video and international sales rights have been acquired by Studio 37.
