FESTIVALS Italy

The Venice Film Festival will have a market and a workshop for young filmmakers

by

The International Film Festival will have its own market. On the occasion of the 69th edition (August 29 – September 8, 2012) the "Light Market" will be launched, which will help to boost Industry Office, towards a new structure for a real market in order to meet the needs of producers, distributors, buyers, sellers, agents and film PR agencies.

"The main aim – according to a press statement – is that of attracting professionals from all over the world, providing them with structures and an organisation which will allow them to achieve a turnover great enough to justify their investment into coming to Venice".

A first step will consist in increasing the opportunity for buyers to view and buy the films presented by the sellers – beyond those seen at the Festival – through a video library. The Market’s areas will contain a threefold structure; the video Library, the Business Centre and the Industry Club.

A four-year programme will be launched for the Industry Office / Light Market which will start from the currently available areas, and will be completed inside the new building.

The festival has also announced the launch of the Biennale College - Cinema, a university-level workshop open to young filmmakers from all over the world, for producing low-budget films. The challenge is to create three feature-length audiovisual works, following a series of activities taking place in the space of a year.

Venice’s Biennale also foresees a more limed down programme, with a reduction in the film presented, in order to give these greater visibility. Additionally, the Controcampo Italiano section, created in 2009 by the former director Marco Müller, will be cancelled.
