Seven feature film projects were selected during the last 2012 session for the CNC’s second committee for advances on receipts. Raoul Peck’s Le jeune Karl Marx [+see also:

film profile] (lit. “Young Karl Marx”) stands out among them. Peck was a member of the jury for the last Cannes competition, and has been well reviewed in the past, notably for Lumumba (2000 Directors’ Fortnight) and Moloch Tropical [+see also:

Co-scripted by the director with Pascal Bonitzer, his latest project's screenplay starts just as young Karl Marx finishes his PhD aged 19, then recounts his journey up until the 1848 revolution. Produced by Velvet Film (Peck’s production company), the feature film should start shooting in September 2013.

film profile] (lit.”I am not a bastard”) has also received the promise of an advance on receipts. This new project by the director of Voyages (1999 Directors’ Fortnight, 2000 Cesar for Best First Film and Best Editing, Louis Delluc Prize) and Nowhere Promised Land [+see also:

film profile] (Jean Vigo Prize in 2008 and in the competition in Locarno) is produced by Thelma Films.

Other selected projects include Jean-François Laguionie’sanimation feature Louise en hiver (lit. "Louise in winter" - Laguionie also directed A Monkey’s Tale, Black Mor’s Island, and The Painting [+see also:

Two women directors also stand out on the list of selectees: Sarah Leonor (A Real Life [+see also:

film profile], a contender in Locarno in 2009) with Le grand homme qui ne voulait pas mourir (lit. “The great man who did not want to die” - screenplay co-written by the director with Emmanuelle Jacob – production: Les Films Hatari) and Pascale Breton (noticed in Turin in 2004 and in Rotterdam in 2005 with Illumination) with Mémoire vive (lit. “Live memory” - production: Zadig Films).

An advance on receipts is also to go to Benoît Mariage’s Akwaba, a co-production between Belgium (MG Productions), France (Formosa Productions), and Switzerland (Cab Productions) that has already been supported by Eurimages. The film, to recount the meeting between a successful sports scout and a young football player from the Ivory Coast, is soon to start shooting with Benoît Poelvoorde and Marc Zinga in the main roles.

Finally, the CNC is to support Chinese director Wang Chao’s A la recherche de Rohmer (lit. “Looking for Rohmer” - production: Reboot Films). His feature The Orphan of Anyang screened at the 2001 Directors’ Fortnight, and he won the Un Certain Regard Award in Cannes in 2006 for Luxury Car.
