Films supported by the MEDIA programme and selected for the 66th edition of the International Cannes Film Festival (15-26 May) total 13, of which 7 are in the running for the prestigious Palme d'Or (see the list at the bottom of the page). Among these, Le Passé by Asghar Farhadi, winner last year of the European Union MEDIA award for best original cinema project. Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for instruction, culture, multilingualism, and youth, will give the EU MEDIA 2013 award to Danish director Thomas Vinterberg as part of the "European Rendezvous" event on Sunday, May 19.

"I am proud to see that European films financed by the MEDIA programme are once more under the Cannes spotlight. The MEDIA programme reflects a solid industry which promotes cultural diversity, and will continue to support talented directors and producers within the environment of the new “creative Europe” programme. European films have always reached success in Cannes, and this year will undoubtedly be no exception to that rule,” Androulla Vassiliou said.

The traditional "European Rendezvous" will take place in Cannes on May 19 and 20. The event, a central moment for the MEDIA programme and Commissioner Vassiliou, will present an opportunity for professionals from the sector to meet political actors with influence in the cinema industry. The commissioner will talk during the seminar on the reinforcement of cultural exception, and will be hosted by the French national centre for cinema (CNC, centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée) at 10am on May 20. A round table by the European Commission will follow on cinema and other art forms (10.30am-noon).

A new era for MEDIA will start in 2014 through the “creative Europe” programme. The new programme will continue to support films’ development, from their conception to their distribution. A new fund for loans aimed at facilitating the cultural sector’s interaction with the financial world will be launched. Creative Europe’s budget for 2014-2020 will top €1.3 billion, representing an increase of 9% compared to the current fund allocation.
