85 feature films shot in the first semester

- A slowdown in production, a sharp decline in investments and a reduction in the number of delocalized shootings, according to the FICAM

85 feature films of French initiative were shot during the first six months of 2013 (71 fiction films giving -8%, 11 documentaries and 3 animated films) versus 102 for the same period last year, according to statistics published by the "Métiers et Marché" Observatory of the FICAM (Fédération des Industries du Cinéma, de l'Audiovisuel et du Multimédia). It is also worth noting that these are the lowest production figures for a first semester in the past six years.

Investments in films that went into production during the first six months of 2013 have fallen by 20% compared to 2012, notably because of a decline in the number of feature films with budgets over 7 M€ (-13%), whilst those with budgets under 2 M€ rose by 9%. The average budget has dropped from 6 M€ in 2012 to 5.2 M€ in 2013.

The only good news is the decline in the number of delocalized shootings, with 24% of the weeks of filming taking place abroad for the first semester versus 37% for the same period in 2012. The FICAM guesses that this could be due to producers anticipating a reform of the Cinema Tax Credit (read the article), which will be retroactive to January 1st, 2013.
