film profile] was the big winner of the second edition of the Sophia Awards, which was held last night in Lisbon. The biopic of poet Florbela Espanca was one of the favourites with a total of fifteen nominations and ended up winning in six categories: Director (Alves do Ó), Leading Actress (Dalila Carmo), Supporting Actress (Anabela Teixeira), Cinematography (Luís Branquinho), Costumes (Sílvia Grabowski) and Sound (Jaime Barros, Tiago Matos and Elsa Ferreira). However, Florbela didn’t make it to the most coveted prize of the evening, the Sophia for Best Film, which went to Tabu [+see also:

film profile] - which won four prizes: Supporting Actor (Albano Jerónimo), Original Script (Carlos Saboga), Artistic Direction (Isabel Branco), Make-up (Íris Peleira) – and Bruno de Almeida’s Operação Outono – which was awarded in the Actor (Carlos Santos) and Adapted Script (Bruno de Almeida, Frederico Delgado Rosa and John Frey) categories.

Cannes and Berlin winning director João Salaviza saw his film Cerro Negro getting the Short Film Award while Regina Pessoa won the Best Animated Short film for Kali The Little Vampire (news).

The Sophia Awards also honoured three special guests for the entirety of their career: actress Laura Soveral, cinematographer Acácio de Almeida and distributor José Manuel Castello Lopes. The prize for Merit and Excellence went to legendary director Manoel de Oliveira.
