(photo – launched in German theatres on March 14 by Concorde with a total of nearly 500,000 admissions), Felix Fuchssteiner began on Monday the filming of Sapphire Blue, the second part of his adaptation of the Gem Trilogy by German author Kerstin Gier.

This sentimental fantastic series of fun and offbeat books for young people, which came out in 2009 and 2010 (Arena Verlag), was so successful throughout the world that the author of children’s novels and genre stories in several volumes has already began a new triptych, this time focusing on another precious metal, silver.

To adapt the Gem Trilogy for cinema, Fuchssteiner trusted Katharina Schöde, who had already written the screenplays for his short film and first feature, Draußen am See. The trilogy follows the mishaps of Gwendolyn, a very normal high school student except for the fact that she sees a ghost and discovers she can travel through time. Between her teenager problems and the mission she is given to reveal a great secret and thus close the “Circle” of twelve travellers of which she is the last (with the help of the eleventh, Gideon de Villiers, who is only two years older than she is), the young woman doesn’t have much time to herself!

Sapphire Blue is again played by Maria Ehrich and Jannis Niewöhner in the roles of Gwendolyn and Gideon. They will notably be surrounded by Josefine Preuß, Katharina Thalbach, Kostja Ullmann, Peter Simonischek and Veronica Ferres. Production is again handled by Lieblingsfilm, mem-film, Geißendörfer Film- und Fernsehproduktion and Tele München, with Arri Film & TV. The filming, which should last three months, began in Thuringia but will continue in Cologne, Aix-La-Chapelle, Coburg, Potsdam, Berlin and London. The release is scheduled by Concorde for next year.
