12/12/2013 - The director of Tres metros sobre el cielo will bring Luz Gabás’ novel to the big screen, adapted by Sergio G. Sánchez

Director Fernando González Molina, who this year successfully adapted Federico Moccia’s novels, has a new project: another literary adaptation, Palmeras en la nieve [+see also:

film profile], by Luz Gabás, published in 2012. The novel has sold over half a million copies in Spain and will be adapted for the big screen by Sergio G. Sánchez (who worked with JA Bayona on Lo imposible [+see also:

film profile] and El orfanato). This will be his first collaboration with González Molina.

Filming for Palmeras en la nieve will start in June 2014 in Huesca, the Canary Islands and Costa Rica.

The cast for this Atremedia Cine and Warner Bros Pictures International production will be headed by Mario Casas.

His epic and intimate story “divides itself into two time periods, two cultures and two generations,” the production said. Action will take place in the transitional period between colonial times, transitional status and full independence, as well as partly in the present on the island of Bioko, which belongs to Spanish Guinea.

The accidental discovery of a letter gone forgotten for years pushes Clarence to travel to the mountains of Huesca in Bioko to visit the land where his father Jacobo and uncle Kilian spent a great part of their youth. Once taken in by the land, as appealing as it is dangerous, Clarence will discover the secret of a forbidden love story enhanced by turbulent historical circumstances, which consequences can be seen up to the present day.
