Alessandro Gassman, Claudia Gerini and Vinicio Marchioni also star, with cameo appearances by Gianmarco Tognazzi, Edoardo Leo, Daniele Liotti, Maurizio Mattioli. The production relied on €6 million and was set in prestigious locations, including the centre of Rome, the Opera Theatre and New York. The romantic comedy combines a variety of extravagant love stories and seeks to be a little different. “It is difficult to write original stories nowadays. Everything has already been done,” Genovesi admits. “I concentrated therefore on the shaping of the characters, with diverse view points and an unexpected finale.” The plot includes a gay man who decides to be heterosexual, a librarian who falls in love with a deaf man, and a teenager who falls for someone 35 years her elder. The film seeks to explore love in all its variety and the difficulty that sometimes comes with accepting it. The dialogues are sometimes lacking and fail to live up to the originality of some of the situations (Foglietta’s personality, who claims to be gay out of laziness is far from a success).

The role of confidante and fixer falls on the shoulders of Marco Giallini’s character. His daughters take it in turns to sit in his office’s psychoanalysis chair. “I had fun describing the reactions of this father to his daughters’ problems and his limitations,” the director explained. “We are all democratic when it comes to diversity but when it happens within the walls of your own home, it can be harder to accept.” Giallini’s solitary figure, abandoned by his wife for an NGO in Cambodia, is by far the most centred, measured and interesting. He is divided between professionalism and amorous instincts towards a beautiful and mysterious woman. Spectators are left impatient for him to join in on the action.

Produced by Medusa Film with Lotus Production, Tutta Colpa di Freud will be in 400 Italian movie theatres from January 23 with Medusa.
