Peter Greenaway guest at the Mashrome Film Fest

The third edition of the Mashrome Film Fest (MRFF) will take place on June 3-6 in Rome at the Orologio Theatre and the Ara Pacis Auditorium. The international festival, the only one in Italy, is dedicated to film mashups and more generally to experimental cinema founded and directed by Mariangela Matarozzo and Alessandra Lo Russo.

This year’s guest of honour is British director Peter Greenaway, who will participate in a panel on June 6 at the Ara Pacis Auditorium. A total of 120 films have been selected among thousands submitted from around the world, competing for a distribution award in collaboration with online platform Ownair. The event is an important moment to spread and promote independent and experimental cinema. Among these, Le Grant (Music category) by Luca Lucchesi produced by Werner Music by the famous German director Herzog, and Isaac (Feature category) by Federico Tocchella with photography by Daniele Ciprì.

New elements include the participation of Africa for the first time with a web series from Kenya and participation – important even if it is on a small scale – of Europe. Countries involved include Germany in the head, the Iberian peninsula, Britain, the Netherlands, Scandinavian countries and France, representing almost half of the films in competition. South Korea, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Brazil and the United States are the other represented countries. The programme, beyond the screenings of films, will feature master classes, meetings with directors, installations and homages.

Finally, an ecological note. Staying faithful to the idea of remix, Mashrome will also be archiving all its films digitally so that the environment is spared thousands of DVDs and printed signs, which normally flood festival offices.
