The Portuguese Film Academy, chaired by producer Paulo Trancoso, has announced that the upcoming Sophia Awards will pay tribute to director José Fonseca e Costa, DoP Eduardo Serra and producer Henrique Espírito Santo for their contribution to the world of film.

José Fonseca e Costa, now 80 years of age, is one of the most renowned directors in Portugal. He was the mastermind behind Kilas, o Mau da Fita (1980), A Balada da Praia dos Caes (1987), A Mulher do Próximo (1988) and Widow and Rich No Longer a Bitch [+see also:

Seventy-one-year-old Eduardo Serra is one of the most highly regarded award-winning Portuguese DoPs on an international level. Having twice been nominated for an Oscar – for The Wings of the Dove in 1998 and Girl with a Pearl Earring [+see also:

in 2004 – Serra was this year awarded a prize by his colleagues at the American Society of Cinematographers. Standing out among his Portuguese cinematic works are The Dauphin by Fernando Lopes and Fados [+see also:

Henrique Espírito Santo, aged 82, was head of production at the Portuguese Film Centre, the country’s first film cooperative, which was founded in 1969 and produced many of the works within the “Cinema Novo” movement, which rejuvenated Portuguese cinema. In addition to having the Sophia Award bestowed upon him, this year also saw the Fantasporto festival pay tribute to him, back in February.
