The Norwegian Short Film Festival in Grimstad will for the first time screen a television series in its 37th programme between 12-17 June: the late Norwegian director Sverre Udnæs’ Alberte (1972) from Norwegian pubcaster NRK, which has not been shown since.

“It is nothing less than a piece of film history,” said the festival’s artistic director, Torunn Nyen, “and we are especially looking forward to meeting the series’ lead actress Monna Tandberg, cinematographer Odd-Geir Sæther and Udnæs’ close friend, Jan Erik Vold.”

Alberte, adapted from Norwegian author Cora Sandel’s Alberte trilogy (1926-1939), is part of the “Women's Stories” focus, featuring medium-length films by female Norwegian directors from 1967-1983, but also foreign and later titles – such as Nico Icon (1995), about the 1970s Velvet Underground star, by German director Susanne Ofteringer, and US director Nancy D KatesRegarding Susan Sontag, launched at this year’s Tribeca Festival.

The work of a particular woman – French author Marguerite Duras (1914-1996) – will be highlighted in the “I Read in the Dark” special sidebar. Norwegian directors Mia Engberg, Dag Johan Haugerud and Eskil Vogt will talk about the creative process and their relationship with Duras, accompanied by Duras’ films as well as their own. Norwegian director Victoria Meirik will dramatise Duras’ The Man Sitting in the Corridor, tying in with the theme of exploring the boundaries between literature, drama and film.

The four competition programmes – Norwegian Shorts, International Shorts, Norwegian Documentaries and Music Videos – are still the cornerstones of the festival; this year, the selection committee has chosen 54 Norwegian short contenders, 23 international ones, 11 Norwegian documentaries and 20 music videos.
