Plans afoot for £40 million studio in Scotland

After a Scottish Government commissioned report in March found that there is an opportunity for a film and television studio facility in Scotland, Glasgow based Pentland Studios has filed a proposal of application notice to Midlothian Council for their consideration. This is the first stage in planning permission approval. If the Council grants permission, Scotland will have a studio nearly twice the size of Pinewood.

The proposed 29-acre studio facility will be located at Straiton, near Edinburgh, and will cost £40 million. Pentland hope to have four sound stages up and running by 2017 with four more to follow in later years.

Gordon Ash, one of the directors of Pentland Studios, said, “Our vision is to create the most modern film studio in the UK, with the scale and facilities to attract film-makers from all over the world.  Scotland has already shown in recent years, with productions such as World War Z, Cloud Atlas [+see also:

and Outlander, that it has the scenery and locations to compete on a global level. What we are missing, however, are the really large-scale studio, filming and production facilities which would complement our locations and enable Scotland to harness much of the high-level investment which currently goes elsewhere.”

The Scottish Government has committed to making £2 million available in loans to assist the film and television production sector and, in recent years, almost £60 million has been made available for supporting the screen industry in Scotland from public sector funds.

On September 18, Scotland will participate in a referendum to decide whether to remain a part of the United Kingdom or be an independent nation.
