19/09/2014 - It’s no surprise that Two Days, One Night by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne will represent Belgium at the Oscars in the category for Best Foreign-language Film

Made up of six professionals from Flemish-speaking and French-speaking cinema and chaired by Joëlle Levie (president of the Film Selection Committee), the jury unanimously welcomed the cinematographic qualities of the latest film by the Dardenne Brothers, Two Days, One Night [+see also:

film profile], as well as the strength of its contemporary and universal theme. It also underlined the film's potential across the Atlantic, on the one hand, because of actress Marion Cotillard, winner of an Oscar for La Vie en Rose [+see also:

film profile] in 2008; on the other hand, thanks to ratings which the movie benefitted from in North America during its screening in competition at the Cannes Film Festival last May. 

Distributed in the US by IFC Films (release on 24 December), Two Days, One Night has already kicked off its American campaign, with selections in key festivals in the race to the Oscars: Telluride, Toronto, and in the coming weeks the New York Film Festival and the AFI Festival in Los Angeles.

It's therefore the fourth time that the Dardenne Brothers are representing Belgium in the race to the Oscars, after Rosetta (1999), The Son [+see also:

film profile] (2005). While the brothers have never up until now been among the final quintet, let’s hope that the presence of Marion Cotillard in the credits and the American promotional campaign which has already kicked off will be crucial in targeting the 9 preselected movies.

Sold in about sixty territories from Sweden to New Zealand, including Japan, Two Days, One Night is also part of the 50 movies in the running for the European Films Awards where it will also compete for the Audience Prize. Produced by Les films du Fleuve and co-produced by Eyeworks in Belgium, the film notably received the support of the CCA, the VAF and of Wallimage.

The Oscars ceremony will take place on 22 February 2015 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The films nominated will be announced on 15 January.
