Gods triumphant at Gdynia

The awards list of the 39th edition of the Gdynia Polish Film Festival, which drew to a close on Saturday, was a testament to the supremacy of Gods [+see also:

film profile] by Lukasz Palkowski, as the movie won out in five categories, scooping the main prize (the Golden Lions), Best Lead Actor (Tomasz Kot), Best Screenplay (Krzysztof Rak), Best Production Design (Wojciech Zogala) and Best Make-up (Agnieszka Hodowana and Aneta Brzozowska). Produced by Piotr Wozniak-Starak for Watchout Productions, the feature was co-produced by Agora, Born To Film Productions, Poreczenia Kredytowe, Digital 35, Orange and Fundacja Sztuki Filmowej Ingenium, with backing from the Polish Film Institute. Next Film will release the title in Polish cinemas from 10 October.
Gods is an uncompromising portrait of professor in medicine Zbigniew Religa, who in the 1980s successfully carried out the first heart transplant in Poland. “He’s an idol. Like many of us, I think, I wanted to know what motivated him. With this film, I wanted to prove that we must always fight for what we truly believe in,” pointed out the director. Interestingly, Gdynia also bestowed three sidebar awards upon Gods: the Project London Award (a prize from Polish film festivals abroad), Radio Gdansk’s Golden Clapper Award and the Journalists’ Award.
The Silver Lions statuette went to director Wojciech Smarzowski and producer Jacek Rzehak for The Mighty Angel [+see also:
