German film goes Down Under

Three German films and five German interational co-productions will be presented at the 50th Sydney International Film Festival (6–20 June, 2003), Australia’s oldest festival and one of the most prestigious international film events.
Halbe Miete /Half Rent) by Marc Ottiker will be shown in the New Directors section. The film had its international premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival and also screened at the Goeteborg Film Festival, the 2002 Hof Film Days and in the German Cinema section at this year’s Berlinale German co-production, Jagoda u supermarketu by Dusan Milic (Yugoslavia/Germany/Italy) was also selected for New Directors. The sidebar Contemporary World Cinema section will showcase Noi the Albino (Iceland/Germany/Great Britain/Denmark) by Dagur Kári and Blind Shaft by Yang Li (Hong Kong/China/Germany) while the documentary section will screen See What Happens – The Story of D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus by Gerold Hofmann (Germany/France/Finland).
The Sydney event will celebrate its landmark 50th anniversary with the presentation of films that were screened there over the last half-century and rarely seen afterwards. The selection includes two German films, Faustrecht Der Freiheit (Fox and His Friends – 1975) by Rainer W. Fassbinder and Vaters Land (Father’s Land – 1986) by Peter Krieg. In addition, Shiraz, a silent film directed in 1928 by Franz Osten (India/Germany/Great Britain) will be presented in a special screening.
