01/12/2014 - Life in a Fishbowl gets the Tridens Award, while the Estonian Film Award goes to In the Crosswind

At the 18th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, in its first international competition as a non-specialised festival accredited by the FIAPF, the Grand Prix and €10,000 from the City of Tallinn went to the Belgian-Mexican co-production Lucifer [+see also:

Russian director Alexey Fedorchenko’s Angels of Revolution received a Special Mention, while the Jury Prize for Best Director went to Marat Sarulu for Move (Kyrgyzstan), and the film also received the NETPAC Award.

film profile] by Estonia's Martti Helde won three prizes: Best Cinematographer for Erik Põllumaa, the Estonian Film Award, and the IFFS (International Federation of Film Societies) Don Quixote Award.  

The Jury Prize for Best Actor in the main competition was awarded to Eddie Redmayne for his role in James Marsh's The Theory of Everything [+see also:

film profile] (UK), while Best Actress went to Kalki Koechlin for her role in Indian directing duo Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar's Margarita, with a Straw.

The FIPRESCI jury judged the main competition, and awarded Iranian filmmaker Reza Mirkarimi's Today. It also won the Ecumenical Jury Prize for the best film depicting Christian values.

In the Tridens Baltic Sea and Nordic competition, Baldvin Zophoníasson's Life in a Fishbowl [+see also:

film profile] (Iceland-Finland-Sweden-Czech Republic) won the Best Debut Film and €5,000.

The Special Award went to Russian filmmaker Nigina Sayfullaeva's Name Me.

The Award for the Best Cinematographer in the Tridens competition was given to Fredrik Wenzel for his work on The Quiet Roar [+see also:

film profile] by Henrik Hellström (Sweden-Norway), which Wenzel also co-wrote.

Mommy by Xavier Dolan won the Award for Best Movie in the North American competition for independent feature films. 

The Audience Award and €2,000 from the City of Tallinn was given to What We Do in the Shadows by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi from New Zealand, while the Black Nights Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Polish actress Maja Komorowska.

In the short-film section of the gathering, the Sleepwalkers International Short Film Festival Grand Prix was awarded to Estonia's Ivan Pavljutsenko for Ivan’s Day. 

Lastly, the jury of the Animated Dreams section gave the Grand Prix to Worst-case Scenario by Estonia's Kristjan Holm.
