09/01/2015 - The Black Movie Festival will invade the city of Geneva from 16 to 25 January transforming it into a giant screen that will host the best of global independent cinema

Ten intense days for new ideas and subversion during which new talents and seasoned directors will battle it out for the heart of the Genevan audience. For its 16^th edition the Black Movie Festival is offering an appetizing line-up of 112 films including 51 Swiss premieres and 12 European premieres, all topped off with a retrospective by Chinese director Wang Bing and a tribute to Japanese Nouvelle Vague of the 60s. The eyes of the young audience will shine with the colours of Brazil thanks to a special focus on Brazilian animation. Embedded in our complex contemporary reality, the Black Movie Festival examines the aesthetic and social universe by opening the debate about a society often torn between chaos and redemption. 

For its 16th edition the Genevan festival has decided to fragment its line-up. New sections united by a common desire to be counter current are the result. In the “A coeur ouvert” section, which places love at the heart of complex and at times cruel stories, Ukrainian director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy presents his latest work The Tribe [+see also:

From Russia, on the other hand, is Another Year by Oxana Bychkova. “La peur au ventre”, section devoted to lovers of powerful sensations, presents another Russian film, Hard to be a God by Aleksei German. The section “La prunelle de nos yeux” instead offers eight films in competition for the Critics’ Award. The films on offer in the “Matière grise” section explore the dark side of the human psyche: Ce qui reste de la folie (Swiss premiere), a Franco-Senegalese co-production by Joris Lachaise or even Les Hustlers, a Togo-France co-production by Egome Amah are two clear examples. A visceral 16th edition that travels fearlessly into the abysses of the human body.
