Swedish distributor NonStop Entertainment has previously launched films theatrically and on VoD at the same time; but for Chinese director Yi’nan Diao’s award-winning thriller Black Coal, Thin Ice, it has prepared a “supersimultaneous release” on Friday 30 January.

A noir thriller set in modern-day China and following an ex-cop and his ex-partner as they investigate a series of murders identical to the killings that cost them both their careers, Black Coal, Thin Ice won both the Golden Bear for Best Film and the Silver Bear for Best Actor (for Fan Liao) at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival, adding the Golden Horse to its trophy shelf at Taipei.
