The independent German distributor Constantin Film has bought all German-speaking rights across all media for the action drama Extortion, from 13 Films; the title stars Frank Grillo (Captain America) and Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible), and will be shot in Puerto Rico in February. Writer-director Phil Volken tells the action-driven story of a doctor who is stranded with his wife and five-year-old son on an abandoned island during their holiday in the Bahamas. Two local fishermen are willing to help them – as long as they pay them one million dollars.

Meanwhile, German distribution outfit Weltkino has acquired the western By Way of Helena for German-speaking territories. Starring Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson and Alice Braga, the new film by Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here) is about a Texas Ranger in a town called Helena, where he tries to get to the bottom of some mysterious deaths.

Distributor Koch Media has sealed a deal with TrustNordisk for the Norwegian action-drama The Last King [+see also:

, which will be released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Nils Gaup tells a story set in the Middle Ages, which sees two warriors flee into the mountains in order to save the last remaining heir to the throne. The main cast of this Norwegian-Irish co-production includes 2014 Shooting Star Jakob Oftebro, Kristofer Hivju, Thorbjørn Harr and Pål Sverre Hagen.

Two young men undertake a very different journey in the coming-of-age drama Beira-Mar by Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, which had its world premiere in the Berlinale Forum. In the movie, the men are heading towards the coast, where they plan to visit some relatives. German distributor Pro-Fun Media has acquired the rights for Germany, Austria and Switzerland from FiGa Films.

Finally, Tiberius Film has picked up four films at the EFM. Among them are the French romantic comedy Love at First Fight [+see also:

by Thomas Cailley, which received nine nominations for the 2015 Césars, and the Canadian thriller October Gale by Ruba Nadda, starring Patricia Clarkson and Tim Roth. Further acquisitions include the horror film Cabin Fever: Reboot by Eli Roth and the Russian 3D fantasy film Viy by Oleg Stepchenko.
