With their German world sales outfit Pluto Film, which was launched at the European Film Market in Berlin, independent German distributor Torsten Frehse and producer Heino Deckert are planning to fill a gap in the market. Their joint venture will focus on international arthouse films and German features.

“We had already been planning to work together for quite a while,” states Frehse. Pluto Film is looking for arthouse movies with festival potential that will also generate revenues. While Deckert is continuing his work as a producer with the Berlin- and Leipzig-based production company ma.ja.de in addition to working as a sales agent with Deckert Distribution, which specialises in documentaries, Pluto Film will only take care of fiction feature films.

by Ivan Ostrochovsky, which celebrated its world premiere in the Berlinale Forum. “Our team individually looks after the films at festivals and fights intensely for the movies,” underlines Frehse. The people in charge of sales and acquisitions are Patricie Pouzarova, who has been working for VoD platforms such as Doc Alliance and EYZ Media, and Jana Wolff, who has already been involved with various international festivals.

Adopting an approach based on full commitment, a great deal of transparency and cost savings for the rights holders, Pluto Film is already receiving positive feedback. “We had offers for eight films right away.” The first German title that Pluto Film acquired is the complex drama Verfehlung [+see also:

“Pluto is the body that is furthest from the sun in our solar system,” sums up Frehse. “Our goal is to give our movies the greatest orbit possible.”
