This year celebrating its 17th birthday, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival – Images of the 21st Century has entered the final stretch towards kicking off its 2015 edition (13-22 March). Over 180 short and feature films will be screened in this year’s programme, spread across the numerous sections of the first-rate documentary gathering.

Bryn EvansHip Hop-eration (New Zealand) will kick-start the festival and follows a group of nonagenarians who hone their walking sticks and polish their wheelchairs as they prepare to travel from New Zealand all the way to Las Vegas’ Hip Hop Dance Championships.

Matteo Gagliardi’s A Nuclear Story (Italy), Bruno Rocchi’s The Limb of Morocco (Italy) and Arnaud Gaillard’s Ikaria (France) will be among the event’s world premieres, while Oscar-nominated director Sam Green will present his live-cinema session The Measure of All Things, combining live on-stage narration, film footage and interview clips, along with a live band performing the soundtrack.

by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado (France/Brazil/Italy) look set to be the festival’s hottest tickets, along with the eagerly awaited return of renowned Mourning Rock director Filippos Koutsaftis, who will be ending his 15-year hiatus with Hail Arcadia, a poetic journey through the past and present of the Arcadian region. 

The gathering’s Agora is set to once again see record-breaking attendance levels, with over 60 film professionals expected to populate its halls and make the most of their deal-making skills with over 450 participating projects: Germany’s ZDF, Hungary's HBO Europe and the United Arab Emirates’ Al Arabiya will be among the media entities attending the festival.

Consulting guru Peter Hamilton will be providing the European Documentary Network’s key master class, entitled The North American Documentary Broadcast Market: An Overview. The workshop will focus on the modus operandi of major players like HBO, PBS, the Smithsonian Channel and so on, while the EDN will also be holding its Pitching Forum during the festival.
