Focus on the Nordics at the upcoming MIPTV

The Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden – will be at the heart of the upcoming MIPTV, the international TV and digital content market in Cannes, which takes place between 13 and 16 April.

Besides a Nordic Day on 14 April, featuring seminars, show-and-tells, market overviews, digital talks and broadcaster Q&As, the Nordic region will also be featured in the wider MIPTV programme: on 11 April, MIPFormats will show new non-scripted content from the four countries, which will also take centre stage at MIPDoc, thus shining a spotlight on the region’s factual and documentary content.

“The Nordics have a story to tell that the global industry would be interested to hear,” said Annie Wegelius, former programme director of Swedish pubcaster SVT, who has curated the programme together with Swedish producer Thomas Hedberg (founder of Titan TV) for MIPTV organiser Reed MIDEM.

Twenty top Nordic broadcasters (including all public stations), producers, distributors and digital-media pioneers have joined forces to stage the promotional effort, set to take place in a Nordic pavilion outside the Palais des Festivals on the Croisette, which will be brought to a close by a red-carpet party for the market’s 1,000 delegates at the Hotel Martinez.

“The Nordic countries have had more than ten years of experience in understanding how next-generation technology has an impact on consumer behaviour, rights issues and the challenges of piracy. We also operate in a brutally competitive market, where budgets are small but the expectations of our well-educated audiences are high,” Wegelius explained.

“That makes us an interesting testing ground for new ideas, on the basis that if a show can make it up here, it can make it anywhere. Finally, we’re not afraid to take creative risks, which is one of the reasons why we punch well above our weight in drama, documentary and other formats,” she concluded.
