Antonio Resines confirmed as president of the Spanish Film Academy
- In the absence of any rivals running for the early elections at the institution, the Cantabrian actor has been confirmed in the position he has been occupying since González Macho’s resignation
On 19 February, when exhibitor/distributor/producer Enrique González Macho – who had been president of the Spanish Film Academy for almost five years (he was re-elected during the most recent elections, which took place in May 2014) – announced he was stepping down for personal reasons (read the news), 60-year-old actor Antonio Resines, who had until then been first vice-president, provisionally took over the role, until early elections were held. But the deadline for presenting nominations passed last Wednesday, and the only one submitted was that of Resines, seconded by filmmaker Gracia Querejeta (who is replacing Catalan director Judith Colell and is releasing Felices 140 [+see also:

film profile]). Thus the lead actor from Lucky Star (a performance that earned him a Goya in 1998) was confirmed as the 13th president of the Spanish Academy of Film Arts and Sciences.
As a result, although there will be no elections on 9 May, the Assembly’s formal ceremony of confirmation will still need to take place, and at this event, Resines will be appointed president for the next four years. The actor will continue along the same lines as González Macho, and among his projects are the celebration to be held for the 30th anniversary of the Goya Awards, securing higher levels of funding for the institution through the creation of a foundation, and bringing an ambitious project to fruition: that of creating an archive dedicated to the memory of Spanish cinema.
