"Power, true power, power over everything, with a peculiar and poetic tone, seen through the eyes of a monk." This is the cornerstone that Le confessioni (lit. “The Confessions”) by Roberto Andò is based on. The brain behind the multi-award-winning Viva la libertà [+see also:

will follow in the footsteps of Sorrentino, Garrone and Tornatore by directing an international, star-studded cast. The leading actor will again be Toni Servillo, but this time he will be rubbing shoulders with Daniel AuteuilRoman Polanski (whose most recent appearance in an Italian film was back in 2007, in Quiet Chaos [+see also:

The shoot for the film, an Italian-French co-production by Bibi Film and Barbary Films, with Rai Cinema, will get under way on 26 May in France, and will then carry on in Germany and Italy.

Considered to be of cultural interest, Le confessioni is also being backed by Mibact to the tune of €550,000. And it is actually from the justification given by the committee members that we are able deduce the plot, presumably based on the masterpiece by Saint Augustine and being kept secret by the production outfit, at least for now: "The gaze of this man over the personal and political affairs of the other characters is what channels the eyes and ears of the viewer into a world of shadows, which lives in secrecy and which, through a secret – that of the confession – will be threatened. [...] Writing that knows how to blend different genres, in order to produce an innovative result."
