The ICA supports an animation project to the tune of €1 million

Nayola, a feature-length animation project co-directed by José Miguel Ruivo Ribeiro and Jorge António, is to receive financial backing of €1 million from the ICA, according to an announcement made by the Portuguese audiovisual promotional body.

Produced by Praça Filmes, Nayola boasts a screenplay written by Virgílio Almeida, based on the script for the theatre play Caixa Preta, written by Mozambican author Mia Couto and Angolan writer Eduardo Agualusa, which was already brought to the stage in 2010.

Over the last few years, Ribeiro has divided his professional activities between animated film and illustration. Meanwhile, António, who was trained in production at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School, has been engaged in various activities in the world of cinema and television, and he is also a producer of contemporary dance shows. In addition, he is currently shooting a movie entitled A Ilha do Caes.

For its part, the ICA has also announced that the window for sending in project applications in the context of the bilateral support fund for the co-production of Portuguese-French works is now open (the deadline is 24 July); the cooperative initiative has a total of €1.1 million available in 2015.
