Sarajevo to pay tribute to Atom Egoyan
- Canadian director will receive Honorary Heart of Sarajevo
The Sarajevo Film Festival has announced that it will pay tribute to Egyptian-born director Atom Egoyan, who moved to Canada with his Armenian parents when he was two years old.
The filmmaker will receive a Honorary Heart of Sarajevo for his extraordinary contribution to the art of film, and the festival will screen three of his works: Exotica, winner of the FIPRESCI prize in Cannes in 1994, The Sweet Hereafter which garnered him the same award in addition to the Grand Prize of the Jury in 1997, and the Armenian genocide-themed Ararat (2002).
His body of work, which includes theatre, music, and art installations, delves into issues of memory, displacement, and the impact of technology and media in modern life.
Egoyan’s art projects have been presented around the world, including The Venice Biennale, Artangel in London, the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, The Gate Theatre in Dublin, and the Lincoln Center Festival in New York. His award-winning production of Wagner’s Die Walküre was performed in early 2015 at the Canadian Opera Company, earning Egoyan the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Direction.
