As 23 September, the deadline set by the third and final call of the year for funding applications to BLS, looms near, there are a number of projects currently being filmed or set to start filming in the region with the support of the Film Commission.

Opening the summer season on 22 June was KGP Kranzelbinder Gabriele Production with filming for Fly Away Home [+see also:

film profile], the latest film by director Mirjam Unger, which tells the story of the war and the Russian occupation of Vienna of 1945 seen through the eyes of little Christine. Filming took place in Cermes, Merano e Vipiteno.

Meanwhile the small picturesque alpine village of Malga Fane in Val Pusteria was the location of filming, between 20 July and 14 August, for international production Smitten!, the debut film of Barry Morrow, who won the Oscar for Best Screenplay for Rain Man. For his first foray behind the camera, Morrow chose to develop a script halfway between romantic comedy and spy story. The cast features actor and singer Darren Criss, who rose to fame for his role in TV series Glee and Madalina Ghenea (Youth [+see also:

film profile]). The film is being produced by Julia Rask, David Nichols and Barry Morrow himself.

Then there’s director Cristiano Bortone, who started filming Caffè [+see also:

film profile] in Bolzano on Monday 10 August. Producing the film is his company Orisa Produzioni with Rai Cinema, Savage Film, Road Pictures and China Blue, marking the first co-production between Italy and China since the recent signing of a treaty between the two countries (see news article). Filming will continue in the Alto Adige region until the end of the month.

A stone’s throw away from Bolzano, preparations are underway for the new film of Iranian director and screenwriter Amir Naderi, who has chosen the Latemar mountain range as the location for his first project set in Italy, entitled Monte [+see also:

Zivago Media, in co-production with Citrullo International, will start filming on 14 September and the director’s decision to build the set at a height of approximately 2,500 metres promises to be a challenge for everyone involved. The cast features Andrea Sartoretti and Claudia Potenza.

At the end of September filming will also start on a German production: the film, which will be produced by Roxy Film with Violet Pictures, both of which are based in Munich, will be the latest piece by director Ralf Huettner and will be called Shiverstone Castle [+see also:

In the film, young Stephan is sent to a boarding school in a castle (Coira castle in Sluderno will be used for the purpose), the ancient walls of which are heavy with the memory of the adventures of knights from centuries past. If he wants to fit in, Stephan must first undergo a series of initiation rites.
