(lit. “The Master”), six years after her debut, Above the Street, Below the Water

The €2.8 million Nimbus Film production by Lars Bredo Rahbek, in collaboration with Norway’s Hummel & Nimbus and the Czech Republic’s Sirena Film, follows Casper, who unexpectedly turns up at Darling Studio to confront his father, Simon, who left the family before he was born. Mesteren is one of four Nordic features included in the latest €1.2 million support package from the Nordisk Film & TV Fond (which also covers two documentaries and a TV series), and it is the second Danish recipient, alongside Danish director Peter Schønau Fog’s €3.4 million You Disappear [+see also:

The fund will also back Norwegian director Mikkel Sandemose’s The Ash Lad: In the Hall of the Mountain King, based on Asbjørnsen & Moe’s 19th-century folk tale, described as a “distinctively Norwegian blend of Lord of the Rings and Shrek”. Synnøve Hørsdal and Åshild Ramborg will stage the €6.2 million family adventure for Maipo Film, together with Ireland’s Subotica and Sirena Film. It tells the story of 17-year-old Ash Lad and his brothers, who will save the princess from a vile troll in order to collect a reward that could save the family farm from ruin.

Lastly, Icelandic director Árni Ólafur Ásgeirsson’s fully animated Ploey – You Never Fly Alone will also benefit from fund support. The €7.3 million feature will be co-directed by Gunnar Karlsson, from a script by Fridrik Erlingsson (who were both also behind 2011’s Legends of Valhalla: Thor [+see also:

). Already pre-sold to 30 territories by Munich’s Arri Media World Sales, the production will start later this year in Reykjavik and Antwerp for Hilmar Sigurdsson, of Iceland’s GunHil, with Belgium’s Cyborn animation studios.
