Half-price cinema tickets on Norway’s National Cinema Day
- There will be a preview of Thale Persen’s Valley of Knights: Mira's Magical Christmas and a Lord of the Rings marathon on 7 November
Norwegian cinema association Film & Kino has scheduled Saturday 7 November as the National Cinema Day – the annual celebration of film, this year with 158 theatres that will reduce ticket prices by 50%, and add previews and special events to their repertoire.
“The first National Cinema Day was organised in 1987 – in the 1990s, before official statistics began to be collected, it is said to have taken more than 200,000 admissions. However, the most recent registered record is 192,263, in 2013,” explained Monique Sjøberg, marketing consultant at Film & Kino.
This year’s programme includes a preview of Norwegian director Thale Persen’s feature debut, Valley of Knights: Mira's Magical Christmas; in 2012, Persen made Norwegian pubcaster NRK’s 24-episode TV Christmas calendar, The King of Christmas, and now she is back with a feature-length spinoff/sequel [+see also:

Bjarte Tjøstheim, Kyrre Hellum, Tone Mostraum and Vetle Qvenild Werring play the leads in the family adventure (written by Harald Rosenløw Eeg and Lars Gudmestad) set in the Ridderdalen Valley, where evil reigns and Christmas is cancelled. Only the Gran family – the little girl Mira and her brother – seem capable of saving the holidays. The Frederick Howard and Lars Andreas Hellebust production for Storm Films will be released on 13 November by Nordisk Film Distribusjon.
SF Norge has also scheduled the preview of US director Scott Cooper’s Black Mass, starring Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch in the true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and a violent criminal in South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a mafia family invading his turf. The regular premiere will take place on 13 November.
Many of the participating cinemas have organised their own special screenings set to be visited by directors and actors, and Oslo’s Colosseum will continue its tradition of a marathon screening of New Zealand director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003), which starts at 10:45 pm on 6 November and ends at 11:00 am the following day.
