The Slovakian educational and networking platform Visegrad Film Forum will tackle the topic of film literacy and audience development at its upcoming fifth edition (read the report from the previous edition). “Film literacy is a long-neglected subject within the standard structures of education. In the last few years, the situation has started to improve; however, finding the key to how best to provide such an education, whether formally or informally, will take more time in our country. Other countries do not have it any easier, and that’s why we have decided to prepare a presentation on those who have achieved success,” Lenka Križanová, PR manager of the Visegrad Film Forum, told Cineuropa. Some of the successful projects that will be presented are The Film Cabinet, a popular two-year education programme about the history of world and Slovakian cinema, organised by the Slovak Film Institute; the Dokufest non-profit organisation from Kosovo; the Doc Alliance Academy international platform for the development of film literacy; and the New Horizons Association, which organises a worldwide film education project in 40 arthouse cinemas in Poland.

“The intention behind audience development goes hand in hand with film literacy. We want young people to know how to ‘read’ films, go deeper, understand and interpret them, so that the audience will know how to reflect on what they see on television and the big screen,” Križanová adds. The topic will also be addressed by the director of the Israel Film Fund, Katriel Schory, in his master class. Schory remarked: “We have a lot of films out on the market, but we don’t have a big enough audience for them.”

“We haven’t made any changes to the structure. However, each year the Visegrad Film Forum focuses on different aspects of film production. Last year, we spotlighted sound, while this year, we will focus on architecture, stage design and costumes,” Križanová explained.
