by Pierfrancesco Diliberto, aka Pif, will hit TV screens in Italy this evening, on Rai Uno. The original film raked in a total of €4.6 million in 2013 and won myriad awards, including Best European Comedy at the 2014 EFAs, and the David di Donatello and Nastro d’Argento for Best First-time Director. The series is directed by Luca Ribuoli, written by Stefano Bises, Michele Astori and Michele Pellegrini, and produced by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli, of Wildside, together with Rai Fiction. The cast includes Anna Foglietta, Claudio Gioè, Francesco Scianna and Valentina D'Agostino.

In the series, Pif, who also starred in his directorial debut, serves as the narrator of the story about a family in Palermo in the 1970s. As in the movie, it portrays the Mafia in an ironic fashion, debunking the bosses and restoring the humanity of the great antimafia heroes. “I’m happy that Rai has produced a series that uses this tone,” Pif said at the launch. “It’s a series where there’s no ‘goodie’ or ‘baddie’, where we just spew out depravity and corruption. It’s a series that will also venture into the houses of the mafiosi, in order to take the mickey out of them and belittle them. And the Mafia doesn’t have a sense of humour: if you can see the human, funny side, it’s a triumph.”
