Young talents come face to face with the masters in Un Certain Regard
The Workshop by Laurent Cantet

The Un Certain Regard programme of the 70th Cannes Film Festival (17-28 May) was revealed today in Paris, as was the entirety of the Official Selection (see the article). UCR’s opening film will be Barbara [+see also:

by French director Mathieu Amalric, and the section contains a total of 16 feature films, a figure that is likely to creep up slightly in the days to come. And as things stand, European filmmakers represent more than half of the films set to duke it out, with the selection swinging harmoniously (for the most part) between seasoned directors with a great deal of experience on the world stage and a young generation of filmmakers – most notably female ones.

As for the “big names”, besides Amalric (already awarded in competition on the Croisette), we should especially mention his fellow countryman Laurent Cantet (Palme d'Or in 2008) and two filmmakers who have already passed through the upper echelons of Cannes: Japan’s Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Mexico’s Michel Franco. And another well-known name, Italy’s Sergio Castellitto, will also be taking part.

The six other films in the running directed by Europeans demonstrate a clear wish to focus on new talent and include three female filmmakers: France’s Léonor Serraille and Italy’s Annarita Zambrano, who will be presenting their feature debuts, and Germany’s Valeska Grisebach (who rose to prominence at Toronto in 2001 with Be My Star before taking part in the Berlinale competition in 2006 with Longing [+see also:

; her new film is being produced by her fellow countrywoman Maren Ade). They are joined by Slovakia’s György Kristóf with his feature debut, Bulgaria’s Stephan Komandarev (who made a splash with his first two features, The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner [+see also:

) and Russia’s Kantemir Balagov, who will also be rocking up on the Croisette with his feature debut.

Lastly, we should point out that Un Certain Regard will also open up its showcase to two titles hailing from North Africa (helmed by Tunisia’s Kaouther Ben Hania Attia and by Algeria’s Karim Moussaoui), one Argentinian movie, one Iranian film and one from the USA.

Here are the titles in the Un Certain Regard selection of the 70th Cannes Film Festival (read the 27 April news with the full selection):
