Samira Makhmalbaf named as jury president for Giornate degli Autori 2017

Samira Makhmalbaf will chair the Giornate degli Autori 2017 jury. The Iranian actress and director will follow in the footsteps of Argentinian Diego Lerman, Palme d’Or winner Laurent Cantet, and Canadian Bruce LaBruce who, in recent years, have guided the dynamic jury of the independent Giornate degli Autori section (formerly Venice Days), which is made up of 28 young viewers from 28 European countries – this year 15 boys and 13 girls.

The Giornate degli Autori jury, which is supported by the European Parliament’s Lux Prize and Europa Cinemas, will be guided in its debates by the director of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Karel Och. The €20,000 prize money will be divided between the director and international distributor of the winning film, to facilitate its release in theatres.

Samira Makhmalbaf, who has won the Jury Prize at Cannes twice, once with Blackboards and once with At Five in the Afternoon, is the first woman to chair the Giornate degli Autori jury, in the same year in which the Venice Film Festival has chosen a woman, Annette Bening (see news article), as president of the jury of the international competition of the 74th edition of the festival.
