The 7th edition of the Deauville Green Awards brought together more than 500 film professionals and environmental experts from all over the world. In total, 420 documentaries, image films and adverts were screened in 14 categories at this year’s festival, including Eco-innovations, Sustainable Agriculture, Circular Economy and the Fight and Adaptation of Climate Change. A special focus was dedicated to water. At a round table discussion on “Water and Climate Change,” French glaciologist, climatologist and Nobel Prize Winner Jean Jouzel spoke about the disastrous effects of global warming, which can often lead to floods and droughts.

The lack of drinking water is already a reality in Chile, which is the only country in the world to have privatised its water in favour of agricultural exports and mines. In the impressive short film Secos, Chilean filmmaker Galut Alarcon shows its devastating consequences on local economies and the environment. Starring various outstanding actresses and actors from Chile – who express their support for movements fighting to supply water to all Chilean communities and regions – Secos was awarded the Grand Prix.

 “About half of the films come from abroad,” says Georges Pessis, President of the Deauville Green Awards, who founded the event together with François Morgant in 2012. “We really are an international festival.” The Ushuaia TV Special Prize was awarded to the documentary Another World Is Possible: My Decade in the Youth Climate Movement by Canadian filmmaker Slater Jewell-Kemker, who started filming at the age of 15, when she began to attend environmental summits. A strong message is also delivered in the Grand Prix-winning commercial Et si la gravité n'existait pas ?, produced by Olivier Fraysse for the city of Toulouse, which deals with 40 tonnes of waste a day.

The film and media industry can also take actions to reduce its impact on the environment. The French collective Ecoprod – which provides information and training on sustainable film and TV production – gave insight into recent developments at the “Audiovisual and Environmental Communication” round table discussion. While Caroline Darmon from Publicis discussed the methodology used by the group to monitor environmental impacts and Gildas Bonnel from the Association des Agences-Conseils en Communication (AACC) presented the newly launched label "Agences Actives".

The special Ecoprod prize for an environmental-friendly production was awarded to the documentary Une structure porteuse, histoires des déchets by Salvo Manzone. The Palermo-born filmmaker often feels like a character in Hitchcock's Rear Window when he looks out of the window and sees how people deal with waste. In his documentary, he shows the complexity of the problem with humour and irony, as well as solutions that could lead to a zero-waste policy. “Given that his film deals with the topic of waste, it was natural for me to produce the film in an eco-friendly way,” sums up Salvo Manzone.
